The City

Bariloche is a very easy city to walk and find your way around because it is built along the lake which lies to the north and mountains to the south. The main street is called Mitre. It starts in the Arches of the Central Civic Center with its attractive lakeside plaza and panoramic lake and snow capped mountain views.Spanish in Bariloche with a view

The Civic Center is the heart of the city. It was designed by E. Bustillo in 1930 in Bariloche alpine style and made from local wood and stone. It was inspired by the Swiss and German origins of Bariloche’s first settlers. At the Civic Center you will find the Museum of Patagonia, the Sarmiento Library and the Cultural Centre.

And just next to the Civic Center….you will also find Academia Bariloche. Incidentally, the picture on the right was taken from our balcony.

Starting from the arches of the Central Civic Centre and heading East along the main street Mitre you will find a proliferation of excellent chocolate shops and restaurants. Swiss fondue as well as local trout, wild boar and deer are some of the culinary delights that Bariloche is famous for.
